Television Stations
PBS, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, is a private, non-profit media enterprise
owned and operated by the nation's 349 public television stations. A trusted community
resource, PBS uses the power of noncommercial television, the Internet and other
media to enrich the lives of all Americans through quality programs and education
services that inform, inspire and delight. Available to 99 percent of American homes
with televisions and to an increasing number of digital multimedia households, PBS
serves nearly 100 million people each week.
While there are about 1300 commercial television stations, ownership of the channels
has been reduced to a small number of corporate giants. The Telecommunications Act
of 1996 greatly reduced the restrictions on media ownership, and the FCC is currently
considering further modifications that would bring greater consolidation in the newspaper
and broadcasting industries. Huge mergers in recent years have consolidated corporations
providing Internet, cable, broadcast and print services.
There are four major networks -- NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX. The first three reach 84%
of the TV households, and FOX reaches a significant 75.9%. The largest cable network
(TBS) reaches 44.8% of the TV households.
There are over 1500 licensed operating commercial TV stations, including several
hundred non-commercial public and educationnal stations and numerous closed circuit
systems. It is estimed than more than 95 million American homes have one or more
television sets and over 60 million homes receive commercial cable tv.
The population of the United States has access to multiple television channels, even
in the most isolated locations. In addition to broadcast reception, Americans receive
television through cable subscriptions and Alternate Delivery Systems (ADS). The
most popular ADS is Direct Broadcast Satellite, which is quickly increasing its subscriber
base.
98.2% of American homes have TV sets, and 88% have at least two. 95% of the population
watches TV every day.
Television is the major advertising medium in the US, and the largest ad volume is
on local television. US adults spend more time with television than with newspapers,
radio and magazines combined. TV is the dominant news source in the US.
Radio Stations
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting supports nearly 800 public radio stations
nationwide in their efforts to serve listeners within their local and regional communities.
Annual CPB grants support station operating and programming costs, ensuring access
to programs from National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), and
other national program providers. CPB also supports a national, satellite-based interconnection
system that connects stations with program providers, producers, and other stations.
Via grant initiatives such as the Competitive Funds, CPB strengthens programming,
development and management efforts throughout the public radio system to ensure that
listeners are served by high-quality programming.
There are 10,350 commercial radio stations in the US. While most stations play music
(with Country Music the most popular format), non-music formats of news, talk shows,
sports and business have grown to 13%.
The FCC recently adopted rules creating a new, noncommercial low power FM radio (LPFM)
service. The new service will consist of stations with maximum power levels of 10
watts - reaching an area with a radius of between 1 and 2 miles - and 100 watts.
The are several thousand AM & FM commercial radio stations in the USA, many of
which are affillied to national networks; there are also more than 100 regional
radio networks. More than 500 non commercial FM radio stations are opérated
by colleges, universities and plublic authorities for educationnal purposes.
Currently, there are a total of 10,941 commercial radio stations in
the US, including unrated markets, with 3,587 different owners

Freedom of speech and of the press is protected by the first amendment to the U.S.
Constitution. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an independent United
States government agency, directly responsible to Congress, regulates interstate
and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable.
In addition to commercial radio and television, the US Congress appropriates money
each year ($300 million in the year 2000) to the nonprofit organization Corporation
for Public Broadcasting, which funds over 1000 public television and radio stations
nationwide and provides funding for programming, including educational programming.
Internet
The Internet has been growing rapidly as a media source since 1995 and is currently
available in 38% of US households. There is no evidence, according to Nielsen, that
Internet use is reducing television usage.
